Water conservation is everyone’s responsibility. To help ensure clean water for generations to come, follow these easy tips:
Indoor Usage
- Keep showers under five minutes or take shallow baths.
- Replace old plumbing fixtures with water-saving devices in showers, faucets and appliances.
- Do not let water run while shaving or brushing teeth.
- Only run fully loaded dishwashers and clothes washers.
- Install ultra low flush toilet (they use only 1-1/2 gallons vs. the traditional five!) For older models, fill a plastic bottle and place inside the tank to reduce water use.
- Soak dishes before washing.
- Do not use toilets as a trash disposal.
Outdoor Usage
- Plant "drought-resistant" trees and shrubs.
- Place mulch around trees and plants to retain water and reduce evaporation.
- Water your lawn, plants, and flowers only when necessary. Remember that lawns require more water than most other landscape features, so limit your yard’s size to just what you need.
- Water gardens only when necessary, preferrably in the morning or evening to avoid evaporation.
- Weed frequently - garden intruders rob plants of water.
- Check hoses, faucets and sprinklers for leaks.
- Use a bucket of water when washing your car instead of letting the hose run.
- Never dump oil and chemicals into drains or soil. Call us for advice on proper disposal.
The Most Important Tip of All?
Be sure to use water only when it is needed and always turn it off when you are finished. By conserving this precious resource today, you will help to ensure a clean and healthy tomorrow for our community and our children.
