The Water Distribution Program is responsible for the installation of services to new construction. In most cases, this is limited to domestic and irrigation service that vary in size. Typical installations of a domestic service for most residential developments are 1" in diameter and for businesses can range from 3/4" to as large as 12" services.
The most frequent types of installations performed by the Distribution crews are for residents remodeling their homes. City codes require residents adding additional square footage to their homes to provide fire protection, thus requiring increased volume and pressure to the operation of such a system. Older homes throughout the city were equipped with a 3/4" service when they were originally built.
Adding fire protection to an existing home usually requires a 1" or larger service for it to work properly.
If a larger service is required, the smaller service is usually abandoned. Abandonment also occurs whenever an older structure is being demolished to vacate a lot or to make room for new construction on the existing lot. Service abandonment is typically done under these circumstances.
