Every utility needs good reliable maps of its system. The City of Oxnard Water Distribution Program, along with its Engineering Division, provides continuous updating of the distribution system. Maps of areas of new construction are created from construction drawings by Engineering Design and then given to Water Distribution for field checking to make sure the maps are correct. Any changes are then made to the map and given back to Engineering for final printing. While field checking the maps, we take data points of the assets in the distribution using a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system that records longitude, latitude and elevation. This system allows us to find any assets that may get covered or may be hidden. Typical assets include valves, fire hydrants and water meters.
